Chapter 10

December 1805

Ladies Elaine and Anne received letters from their mutual friend the Countess of Jersey, but as they were planning the betrothal ball for Jane and Alexander to be held at Matlock House on the six and twentieth day of November, they had little time for anything else. The letter to each was placed in a stack of the non-emergency post to be read after the wedding. The day after the ball the families would all depart for London and decamp to Meryton.

The ball was attended by many more members of the Ton than had been invited to Jane’s coming out and had been enjoyed by all. Lady Catherine, Sir Lewis, and Anne de Bourgh arrived in Town a few days before the ball. Little Lewis the second was doing very well, as was Charlotte, as evidenced by the proud grandparent’s attendance at the ball.

As she had at her coming out ball, Jane danced three sets with her betrothed, except this time she danced the opening set with him rather than the second set. No matter how tired they all were, the departure from London the day following the ball was at the scheduled time.

A few days after arriving home from Town, Elizabeth and Jane sat in their shared bedchamber at Longbourn. “Jane, you will be a married woman in a few days!” Elizabeth cried. “I will miss you every day.”

“We will stop here after our wedding trip, Lizzy, Alex promised me that the next time we go to Seaview Cottage you and Mary will be with us,” Jane reassured her younger sister. Since their parents and Jamie had been ripped away from them, the three sisters had never not slept in the same home even for a single night. Jane had foregone inviting one of her sisters along on her wedding trip. Unlike arranged marriages where the practice was much more prevalent, she and Alex loved one another deeply.

“It will be an exceedingly long month until we see you again, Janie, but do not allow my maudlin thoughts to distract from the joyous occasion. I am genuinely happy for you and Alex; I was being selfish thinking about how much I will miss you. You will be happy, Jane; Alex is one of the best men that I know,” Elizabeth stated as she hugged her older sister.

“Unfortunately, it is the way of the world for our gender. We grow up and then leave our childhood homes to cleave ourselves to our husbands. One day it will be your turn, Lizzy and then Mary too will have a new family. Regardless of how far we live from one another, the bonds of sisterhood between us are and always will be unbreakable,” Jane stated emphatically.

The two talked well into the night and only fell asleep after midnight.

Convinced he had killed his former employer, Bennet had ridden hard, this time not halting until he was in Wiltshire. He had remained at an inn in the shire for three days, allowing his horse to be well rested, but mainly so he could drink and indulge in some games of chance.
